Design & Usability

My philosophy.

Perhaps philosophy is too pompous of a word. But my ideas on web design are pretty simple. Usability comes before design. In a perfect world, they would go hand in hand, but the limitations of the web and the browsers you view it through are still not perfect themselves. So usability must come first, or the message you are trying to give your user will fail.

Clean and simple

I will pare down your navigation menu if it's confusing or beef it up if it's lacking. Strong, simple words can help guide your user through your content. Graphics can be fun and striking as long as they don't get in the way or make things difficult to see or use.

No Flash.

Maybe that's too harsh, but for the most part, I shun Flash. It was a gimmick of the 90s and it was used for the simple sake of it. It creates sites that are inaccessible to the handicapped and to the search engine crawlers. There are work-arounds, but I have yet to see the worth of using it in the first place. Certainly, if you have content that begs for Flash, like animation or a beautiful brochure or art site, it has its place. But for the majority of you, it is all 'flash' and no substance. And more often than not, it will get in the way of the person you are hoping most to impress. That said, I do have people I can sub-contract for it if it is what you have your heart set on.
